Multilingual websites - why you need them
A multilingual website is a website that has content in more than one language. Usually the browser will check the language settings of the user and show them your website’s pages in the right language. A visibile language switcher will be placed in either the header or the footer of your site if visitors want to switch.
There are a number of reasons why you might want or need a multilingual site.
- Not all your website visitors are English speakers
- Increase sales
- Advantage over the competition
- Get found better in search engines
The downside of a multilingual website is that it takes a lot more work to maintain. Each change in the content of the page will have to be repeated in a number of other languages. So if you are sure your intented audience is from one specific country you might want to stick to only one language.
